The Robin Hood benefit is not a dinner with a stage at one end. It is a temporary building. Robin Hood converts more than 400,000 square feet of the Javits Center into it, and the conversion runs on roughly 1,500 staff, vendors and production crew working around the clock for about 170 hours. The room then holds more than 3,000 guests, plus 500 community partners and 500 fans admitted for the concert. It comes down the same week.
This year the theme was food, which meant the decor was also inventory. The cocktail installations and dinner centerpieces were built from nearly 60,000 donated shelf-stable food items and pieces of kitchenware, all of it given afterward to Robin Hood community partners including City Harvest, River Fund, Grand Street Settlement, St. John’s Bread & Life, Project Renewal, Win and Children’s Aid. Robin Hood reports that last year’s benefit avoided nearly 64 metric tons of CO2e by cutting trucking and changing production practices. P!NK headlined, The Lumineers played the seated dinner, Pete Davidson did stand-up, and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City performed.
The Benefit Event Census found that 86 of 120 American benefit events do not publish what they raise. Far fewer publish who built the room. Robin Hood publishes a full production credit every year, which is why this list can exist at all, and which is the standard worth holding other organizations to.
